چکیده

In this study the pressure-drop, mean and rms axial velocity data are measured using a differential pressure transducer and a laser Doppler anemometer for the flow of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids in a concentric annular pipe (radius ratio =0.5) at various Reynolds numbers encompassing the laminar, transitional and turbulent regimes. Three different fluids are utilized; a semi-rigid shear-thinning polymer (a xanthan gum), a polymer known to exhibit a yield stress (carbopol) and a Newtonian fluid (glycerine-water mixture) as the reference fluid. A longer Reynolds number range for the transitional flow regime is observed for the more shear-thinning fluid as determined from the axial rms fluctuation level measured at fixed radial locations. Contrary to what is observed for the Newtonian fluid the higher shear stress on the inner wall compared to the outer wall does not lead to earlier transition for the shear thinning and the yield stress fluids, xanthan gum and carbopol, where more turbulent activity is observed in the time traces at the outer wall region. The mean axial velocity profiles show a slight shift (~5%) of the maximum velocity location towards the outer pipe wall within the transitional regime only for the Newtonian fluid.

A Numerical Analysis of Vapor Flow in Concentric Annular Heat Pipes

A numerical method based on the SIMPLE algorithm has been developed for the analysis of vapor flow in a concentric annular heat pipe. The steady-state response of a concentric annular heat pipe to various heat fluxes in the evaporator and condenser sections are studied. The fluid flow and heat transfer in the annular vapor space are simulated using Navier-Stokes equations. The governing equatio...

A Review of Concentric Annular Heat Pipes

A detailed description of a concentric annular heat pipe (CAHP) operation is presented in low to moderate temperature ranges (50–200◦C). The steady-state response of a CAHP to various heat fluxes in the evaporator and condenser sections are discussed. Two-dimensional mathematical modeling of the fluid flow and heat transfer in the annular vapor space and the wicks are described. The fundamental...

Concentric Mixing of Hardwood Pulp and Water

Concentric mixing experiments with velocity ratios of up to 6 have been completed using hardwood pulp of 1.0, 1.9, and 2.9% consistency and water. Qualitative observations reveal that by increasing the velocity ratio, the inner jet spread angle is found to be larger (i.e., the jet spreads faster) and the downstream mixing region is more uniform. Furthermore, local consistency measurements show ...

A Numerical Study of the Effect of Aspect Ratio on Heat Transfer in an Annular Flow Through a 270-Degree Curved Pipe.

In the present paper, a three dimensional annular developing incompressible laminar flow through 270- degree curved pipe is numerically simulated. The dimensionless governing equations of continuity, momentums and energy are driven in toroidal coordinates. The governing equations are discretized by projection algorithm using forward difference in time and central difference in space. A three-di...
